Google just came out with a new service called Google Latitude. This service allows users to transmit their location back to Google which is then displayed on Google Maps. GPS smart phones will be able to transmit this sort of information as well as any laptop that’s connected to the internet.
While this may be too “big brotherish†for some people, others might find it useful for locating their kids or possibly even a stolen cell phone.
However, if you plan on using this for your business to keep track of employees or vehicles then you might be disappointed. First off, there’s a lot of personal informaiton that could be passed to Google and not just your central business computer. Also, for companies that have fleets of vehicles, this still doesn’t combat any sort of idling costs or stolen truck/theft recovery issues since it wouldn’t be attached to the vehicle. For that sort of tracking you’ll need a more comprehensive vehicle tracking solution which is integrated with the vehicles being used within your fleet.
